Best In Show painting by Dan Sharkey

Cash awards totaling $2,900 were presented at the opening of “Expressions 2010,” a juried all-media exhibit at the Rowayton Arts Center Gallery at 145 Rowayton Avenue. An oil painting by Dan Sharkey of West Redding was judged Best in Show. Other award winners by category are: Acrylic: first – Ron Arnold, second – Sholeh Janati (both of Westport), third – Gerald Guarino (Normandy Beach, NJ); Mixed Media: first — Janet Beres, second – Richard Ventre (both of Norwalk); Oil: first – Mary Morant (Darien), second – Stuart Ferrell (Rowayton), third – Janine Brown (Fairfield), honorable mention – Carey Dunne (New York City); Pastel: first — Agata Lipnicka (Ansonia), second – Julie Hopkins (Ridgefield), third – John Lawson (Bridgeport); Photography: first Tom Kretsch (Westport), second – Ben Larrabee (Darien), third – Jackie Liljegren (Norwalk), honorable mention – Robert Sachs (Rowayton); Sculpture: first – Deborah Rauh (Westport); Watercolor: first — Wendy Pieper (Westport), second – Sandra Aldrich (Westport).

The exhibit continues through Sunday, March 21 and is on display from 12:00-5:00 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and from 1:00-4:00 p.m. on Sundays. Admission is free. The juror was award-winning artist Joseph Fucigna, director of the Studio Art Program at Norwalk Community College (NCC). Fucigna, who4 selected 41 works from 116 entries by RAC members and non-members and chose the prize winners, said, “What I look for in a work of art is the artist’s intention. Have they achieved what they set out to do? If they have, it succeeds as a work of art, and is a worthy piece.”

MEZZANOTTE OBSCURA
A film by Lori Petchers

A screening of Mezzanotte Obscura, a documentary short film about Thomas Mezzanotte, by filmmaker Lori Petchers, is planned for Sunday, March 14 at 3:00pm at 22 Haviland Street Gallery in South Norwalk. Lori will be present, along with the artist, to discuss the making of the film.  Mezzanotte Obscura recently premiered at the Big Sky Documentary Film Festival in Montana, and will be screening at the Portland Women’s Film Festival, Cleveland International Film Festival, Kent Film Festival and in NewFilmmakers film series at the Anthology Theatre in NYC over the next several months.  For more information please visit:   www.mezzanotteobscurafilm.com

Lori Petchers, a veteran of public television, has worked on numerous film projects, including “The Amistad Revolt: All We Want is Make Us Free,” for which she garnered a regional Emmy nomination.  Fascinated by the creative process, Lori has made several short films on artists and performers.  Currently she is working on a personal essay film as well as The Midlife Project, a web-based compilation of women’s midlife stories.

The screening is in conjunction with 22 Haviland Street Gallery’s newest exhibition, MEZZANOTTE.  The exhibition runs from March 12 – April 9.  Exhibition hours are Fridays 6-9pm, Saturdays & Sundays 1-5pm, and Wednesdays 3-5pm.

2nd Biennial Footprint International Print Competition 2010
A competition and exhibition for fine-art prints that are exactly one foot square.

Footprint International 2010 presents an opportunity for contemporary printmakers worldwide to address the square in a 12- inch by 12-inch (30.5 x 30.5 cm) format. The square format was uncommon in art until the advent of 20th-century abstraction. Rectangular horizontal and vertical shapes for landscape and portraiture, respectively, were, and in fact still are, the norm. Composing in the square is an artistic challenge.

Drawings, photographs, or direct reproductions are not eligible. Art must be hand-pulled and generated on stone, block, or plate using printing processes. Computer generated art is eligible only if it incorporates other methods of hand-pulled printing or handwork.
